PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said the outcome of the political crisis which saw Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob rising to the position of the prime minister showed the opposition must work harder to face the 15th general election.
Anwar, who is the opposition leader, acknowledged that Ismail's appointment as the ninth prime minister was in accordance with the law.
"We take note that the decision was in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution, parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
"For the opposition, this is a challenge for us to work harder to face the 15th general election," he said in a statement.
Anwar also called for collective action to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Let us pray and act together to immediately address the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crises for the people.
"For all leaders, (party) members and supporters, we urge everyone to accept this decision with the clear determination of working harder in the face of the 15th general election so that we can regain the people's mandate like we did in the last general election," he said.
The next general election could either be held next year or in 2023.
The Port Dickson MP had garnered the support of 105 MPs while Ismail, who is the Bera MP, managed to cobble together 114 MPs.
A total of 111 MPs were needed for a simple majority. There are 220 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat and two vacant seats.
The search for a new prime minister started after Muhyiddin Yassin, who is the Bersatu president, lost his majority following the withdrawal of support by 15 Umno MPs.
Fourteen out of the 15 Umno MPs returned to Perikatan Nasional's fold after it was agreed that Ismail, who is the Umno vice-president, will take over as the prime minister. The sole holdout was party veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Ismail is set to be sworn in later today.
